Billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are now launching themselves and other tourists into space atop rockets they built with their own hobby money. From the perspective of folks toiling to make ends meet, the double fist pumps in zero gravity and desert press conferences in flight suits are a departure from hard-scrabble reality.

While humankind faces a global pandemic, the existential threat of a warming planet, poverty, hunger, war, and the backsliding of democracy, these billionaires are throwing their money at the vainest of vanity projects. With socioeconomic, racial, and environmental justice feeling as distant as ever, many wonder would all this money have not been better spent on fixing what ails humanity?

Our Future is Now exists to broaden our public (and, yes, political) discourse. Its many interests will be ideas that are commonly discarded because they are considered impractical or impossible in the present.  

Peace on Earth. Interstellar travel. World parliament. These utopian ideas and their traits - found in works of science fiction, speculative fiction, futurist writings, and scholarship – will be at the heart of the discussion on this page.

In stating that our future is now, this blog advances the idea that we must have our heads in the clouds and our boots on the ground. We must keep dreaming. We must plan to achieve those dreams – even in unfathomable timeframes. And we must act on those plans even knowing that our great grandchildren will be continuing that work.

This blog is, therefore, guided by a belief that humanity is worth saving and, in order to do so, we must look further into the future for ideas and bring them into the now. In every minute of every life is the beginning of infinite possible futures. Now is always the time to dream about, plan for, and act on the futures we want.
